About the Corrected Calcium Calculator

A significant portion of circulating calcium is bound to serum proteins, primarily albumin. When serum albumin levels are abnormal, measured total calcium may not accurately reflect the physiologically relevant calcium concentration.

How the Corrected Calcium Calculation Works

This calculator uses a clinically accepted albumin-corrected calcium formula

The calculation requires:

  • Serum calcium value
  • Serum albumin value

Formula Used (Corrected Calcium)

For serum calcium in mg/dL and serum albumin in g/dL:
Corrected Calcium (mg/dL) = Measured Serum Calcium + 0.8 × (4.0 − Serum Albumin)

Serum calcium is expressed in mg/dL.

Serum albumin is expressed in g/dL.

4.0 g/dL represents the normal reference albumin value.

If calcium is entered in mmol/L:
mg/dL = mmol/L × 4.0
If albumin is entered in g/L:
g/dL = g/L ÷ 10

After these conversions, the standardized formula is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions About Corrected Calcium Calculator

The calculator adjusts total serum calcium using albumin values to estimate corrected calcium levels when albumin is abnormal.

Total calcium can appear falsely low when albumin levels are reduced. Corrected calcium provides a more accurate estimate of physiologically active calcium.

The normal corrected calcium range is generally around 8.5-10.5 mg/dL, although reference ranges may vary between laboratories.

Corrected calcium calculation is useful in critically ill patients, chronic disease conditions, liver disorders, malnutrition, and hypoalbuminemia.

Corrected calcium is mathematically adjusted using albumin values, while ionized calcium directly measures biologically active calcium in blood.

The calculator requires serum calcium and serum albumin values and automatically standardizes units before calculation.

Yes. The calculator supports mg/dL, mmol/L, g/dL, and g/L with automatic unit conversion for accurate corrected calcium calculation.

The calculator applies the Payne formula: Corrected Calcium = Total Calcium + 0.8 (4 - Albumin).

Yes. MocDoc LIMS integrates corrected calcium calculation directly into laboratory workflows, reducing manual effort and improving reporting consistency.
